TIMOTHY GATENBY

Based in London|born 1987

Tim Gatenby’s work uses classical painting techniques to subvert pop cultural icons. Often combining deconstructed cartoon characters with dark humor, his images reflect the pressures of consumerism and modern societal tendency towards overindulgence.

There is a twisted nostalgia to Gatenby's paintings. His work subverts familiar characters not only through subject matter but also through technique. Despite the darkness found in the various styles and themes explored in Gatenby’s work, there are often playful, idiosyncratic moments that crop up, as if for his own amusement as much as the viewer’s.

PIKA COLA

'Fat Pika' humorously conveys the easiness of modern life. The radical notion that you can order any food delivered straight to you at any point in time without having to move. Obviously you will get fat if you eat McDonald's all day while sitting on your phone and not moving, but who really cares.

'Stona Lisa' came together fairly organically in that Stona rhyme's nicely with Mona and Lisa Simpson is an iconic character like Mona. I suppose you don't imagine such a beautiful and mysterious portrait to be subverted with such vulgarity but that's what I enjoyed. When I studied in Florence I lived near to where Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa and spent a lot of time thinking of what it must have been like. I wanted to experience 1% of what Leonardo did but make something that contemporary audiences can relate to and enjoy.

I got the idea for this painting 'McGizmo' from a Chihuahua called Crumps, he reminded me of the Gremlins. He loves trying to eat stuff so I thought it would be funny to combine the image of Gizmo with his huge bat-like ears and some chips and a milkshake. Again there is the theme of McDonalds making you fat which is something everybody knows but somehow there is an innocence it as well.
